The vice president seat become vacant after the appointment of the now Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer Maxwell Jele, on the 7th March, 2021 during the General Assembly.

Ezulwini-The President of the Athletics Association Eswatini, Zakhele Dlamini has been nominated as the Vice President of the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA). Dlamini who is not new in the sports industry in the country won the election by a majority vote of 24 and beat second placed Gideon Mthembu who amassed 12 votes.

The vice president seat become vacant after the appointment of the now Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer Maxwell Jele, on the 7th March, 2021 during the General Assembly.

There were three candidates who were competing for the position and these included Eswatini Basketball (EBA) President Nhlanhla Maphanga and Eswatini Cycling Association (ECA) President Gideon Mthembu. The election ended up being a two-horse race after a debate ensued on the eligibility of Maphanga, who was in the race while holding the position of a board member.

A conflict of interest and the contravention of the EOCGA constitution, which discredits a board member to stand for the elections as per Article 26, which states clearly that, “A member of the Board can only vacate office upon the expiry of a one month notice in writing with the intent to resign from the said office.” The General Assembly challenged the Board’s decision to have Maphanga continuing with Vice President seat race despite this being in in contrary with the demands of the Constitution.

After a long deliberation which took almost an hour on the matter which was the last item on the agenda, it was when that Maphanga was requested to withdraw from the race and he declined arguing that standing for the electins was an opportunity for him to grow. The President was left with no choice but to instruct the house to vote in order to decide whether Maphanga continues with the race or drops out. It was during this process where the house voted him out of the race, leaving Mthembu and Dlamini to contest the position

Upon his announcement as the President’s right hand man, the new Vice President, Zakhele Dlamini was welcomed to the first table by the President Adam “Bomber” Mthethwa. The President then congratulated Dlamini for winning the race and appreciated the General Assembly for their participation in the election.
