Roodepoort, South Africa – Massmart has confirmed that South Africa’s first Walmart store will open at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort, creating more than 80 new jobs. The store will be managed by Onicca Mothapo, who brings 20 years of retail experience to the role.
Mothapo, currently a Builders Warehouse store manager, holds an Advanced Diploma in Retail Management with Distinction from the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business. She began her career as a store cashier and has worked her way up through Massmart, which also owns Makro, Game, and Builders Warehouse.

“Opening this store is deeply personal. From where I began my career, I could never have imagined that I would one day manage the first Walmart store in Africa,” Mothapo said. She added that the store will focus on customer service, Walmart’s Every Day Low Prices, and community engagement.
The Walmart store will feature a mix of local and international products. Massmart confirmed that most items will be sourced from local suppliers, alongside global brands not commonly available in South Africa. Mark Scott, Massmart’s merchandise vice president, noted that the store’s sweets and confectionery aisle will carry international favourites such as Mike & Ike, Reese’s, Warheads, and Nerds.
Massmart said Walmart will provide fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel, technology, and general merchandise, aiming to create a shopping experience that blends global quality with local relevance. Customers will also be able to shop online and in-store.
Miles van Rensburg, Massmart president and CEO, said the new store offers West Rand residents an opportunity to enjoy Walmart’s low prices and wide selection while supporting local suppliers.
