Mbabane: Long-standing human rights defender has passed on at the age of 83.

Hlophe was a former trade unionist and ex-chair of the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa, and a former Coordinator of the Swaziland Coalition of Concerned Civic Organisations (SCCCO).

He was also the longest-serving political columnist for the Times of Eswatini, Sunday publication, where he analyzed, gave context and insight into political events in the country.

Hlophe succumbed to COVID-19 related illness at the Lubombo Referral Hospital on Wednesday night.

His death was confirmed by his elder brother Eric. According to his brother Eric, Hlophe was confirmed to have contracted the virus last Saturday and was then admitted to the Lubombo Referral Hospital. He leaves behind his wife, five children, and six grandchildren. Musa’s brother mentioned that he was the second born of Jabulani Hlophe and Eldah Zikalala. Hlophe was regarded as a walking dictionary of local politics as he was well versed with most of the political dynamics in the country
