Mbabane: Prime Minister Cleopas Sipho Dlamini has officially opened the country’s first currency museum at the Central Bank of Eswatini where he was representing His Majesty, King Mswati III.
All over the world, museums serve as heritage sites that preserve and promote the religious, cultural, and historical value of objects and materials collected.
In October 2019, the Central Bank of Eswatini commenced a project of constructing a Currency Museum at the Central Bank of Eswatini premises, in Mbabane on the1st Floor of the Umntsholi Building. The objective of this project is to conserve and exhibit the history of the country’s currency from inception. The currency is set to be accessible to members of the public for educational, research, and leisure purposes.
The Prime Minister said the new Eswatini Currency Museum will be of great benefit to emaSwati and visitors to the Kingdom in educating as well as documenting the history of the local currency.
The Premier commended the Central bank for the efforts done in investigating and documenting the history of the currency which he said will be of benefit to future generations of the country. Dlamini said even visitors to the Kingdom will gain a deeper appreciation of the Kingdom’s pride, the Lilangeni, and the rich history depicted on the banknotes and coins.
He said those interested in economics and business will find through the study of numismatics, a wealth of information. Such information is the equivalent of a life-long education-not only in the study of coins and currencies, but also about the people of Eswatini and their history.
Dlamini highlighted the importance of the museum saying future generations must appreciate the evolution of trade and the different mediums of exchange that the Currency Museum has prudently captured. The birth of a currency is rich and unique in its nature as it depicts the country’s pride.
“This is a proud moment for Eswatini, where we take a step back to revisit what matters to us as emaSwati-our pride and joy-the Lilangeni Currency. The currency has helped us determine our nation’s economic health and the well-being of all the people of Eswatini over the years,” said the Prime Minister.
