BIG BEND – Mbabane Swallows suffered a painful start to their 2026/27 MTN Premier League campaign after a stoppage-time penalty handed Ubombo Sugar a 1-0 victory at Mayaluka Stadium on Saturday.
With the match seemingly heading for a goalless draw, Mpendulo Ndwandwe stepped up in the fifth minute of added time to convert from the spot and send the home supporters into wild celebrations.
The late strike condemned Swallows to a disappointing opening-day defeat after the capital side had struggled to turn their opportunities into goals.
The Red and Whites went into the encounter looking for a positive start following a difficult pre-season, which included a 4-0 defeat to Mbabane Highlanders in the 8Bet Trade Fair Cup.
The club has also undergone significant changes, with several key players departing for other clubs. Management had called for patience as the team continues with its rebuilding process, but Saturday’s defeat means the side will have to wait for another opportunity to show signs of progress.
Despite creating opportunities, Swallows could not find the finishing touch, allowing Ubombo to remain in the contest until Ndwandwe delivered the decisive moment from the penalty spot.
For Ubombo Sugar, the victory provides an ideal opening to the new campaign. The Big Bend side finished 12th last season with 35 points after a difficult campaign that saw them flirt with relegation.
Saturday’s victory, however, gives Ubombo an early three points and another important result against one of the country’s established clubs.
The win also continues Ubombo’s recent success against Swallows. The two sides met in January, with Ubombo claiming a 2-0 victory on that occasion.
Swallows will now turn their attention to their next league fixture, where they will be expected to respond to the setback and begin their campaign on a stronger footing.
