MBABANE- Methula is set to experience a sporting and entertainment extravaganza on November 28, 2026, as sports journalist, analyst and coach Linda “Master” Dlamini brings a community-focused Sports Day to Etjendlovu Sports Ground, starting at 08:00.
Running under the theme “Sports Build Stronger Communities,” the event promises a day filled with sporting competitions, music, comedy, food and activities for all ages, while creating a platform for local talent to shine.
The initiative seeks to introduce and promote sporting codes that are not commonly played in rural communities, giving aspiring athletes an opportunity to discover their abilities and potentially develop into future national representatives.
Among the sporting activities lined up are cross-country running, armwrestling, boxing, darts, netball, football and tug of war.
Cross-country running will be one of the key attractions, with the event offering local runners an opportunity to showcase their abilities as Eswatini prepares to host a major African cross-country competition early next year.
Armwrestling will also be introduced to the community, opening the door for residents to explore a sport that combines strength, technique and endurance.
Boxing enthusiasts can look forward to an action-packed showcase featuring boxers brought in by the Eswatini Boxing Association. The organisers view this as an opportunity to expose the community to competitive boxing and inspire aspiring pugilists.
Darts is another sporting code the initiative hopes to popularise, particularly among young people whose potential may have gone unnoticed.
The organisers believe that taking the sport to Methula could help uncover talented players who might one day represent Eswatini on bigger stages.
Netball is also expected to feature prominently, with plans underway to bring the national women’s team to face a Methula-selected side. If confirmed, the encounter would give local players a valuable opportunity to test their skills against experienced national players.
Football, one of the country’s most popular sports, will add to the excitement through a mini knockout tournament, followed by a proposed exhibition match between a Methula-selected team and one of the country’s established football sides.
Plans are also underway for a women’s football tournament ahead of a bigger event scheduled for December, signalling the organisers’ intention to create more opportunities for women in sport.
Beyond the competitions, the Sports Day will embrace the entertainment side of the festival season, with local comedians expected to keep audiences laughing while musicians provide the soundtrack for the celebrations.
Food and refreshments will also be available, making the event an opportunity for families and friends to spend the day together.
However, the initiative is not solely about sport and entertainment. Giving back to the community will form an important part of the programme, with donations intended to support less privileged members of society.
This community-centred approach places social responsibility alongside talent development, with the organisers seeking to make the event meaningful beyond the playing field.
By bringing together established sporting associations, local athletes, entertainers and residents, the Sports Day aims to create opportunities for talent identification while strengthening community bonds.
The planned activities could also help expose young people to sporting disciplines they might otherwise have limited opportunities to experience, potentially opening pathways to further training and competition.
For Methula, the event represents an opportunity to showcase its people, celebrate local abilities and demonstrate how sport can contribute to community development.
As the preparations building towards November 28, residents are encouraged to attend in numbers, support participating athletes and become part of what the organisers hope will be a memorable occasion.
