Mbabane– Transport and Restaurants and Hotels recorded the fastest annual price increases in June as Eswatini’s inflation rate eased to 2.6 per cent, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the Central Statistical Office (CSO).
While headline inflation declined from 2.7 per cent in May to 2.6 per cent in June, prices continued to rise more rapidly in selected sectors of the economy.
The Transport division recorded annual inflation of 4.2 per cent, the highest among the categories highlighted in the report. Restaurants and Hotels followed with an inflation rate of 2.8 per cent.
The report also showed that inflation for Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics slowed to 3.2 per cent.
Overall, inflation for goods stood at 3.1 per cent while services recorded 1.8 per cent on an annual basis.
Compared with May, consumer prices rose by 0.1 per cent in June. However, month-on-month decreases were recorded in Restaurants and Hotels, Transport, and Housing and Utilities.
The June CPI report showed that Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels remained the biggest contributor to headline inflation, contributing 1.7 percentage points, followed by Transport at 0.7 percentage points and Clothing and Footwear at 0.3 percentage points.
