Bafana Bafana make bold changes for crucial Czechia clash
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

South Africa have named an attacking lineup for today’s must-win FIFA World Cup Group A encounter against Czechia, with coach Hugo Broos making several changes following the disappointing opening defeat to Mexico.

The match is vital for Bafana Bafana’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages after losing their first group game.

The lineup shown features captain Ronwen Williams in goal behind a back four of Khuliso Mudau, Ime Okon, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Aubrey Modiba. In midfield, Jayden Adams, Thalente Mbatha and Teboho Mokoena are expected to provide control and creativity, while Oswin Appollis and Thapelo Maseko support striker Iqraam Rayners in attack.

Broos has been forced into changes after suspensions to key players Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane. Reports suggest the Belgian coach is likely to abandon the defensive approach that failed against Mexico and adopt a more attack-minded formation in an effort to secure all three points.

Much of South Africa’s hopes will rest on the creativity of Appollis and Maseko on the wings, the midfield influence of Mokoena, and the finishing ability of Rayners. Captain Williams will also be expected to lead from the back against a physically strong Czech side led by striker Patrik Schick.

Analysts believe South Africa must improve significantly after creating few chances against Mexico. A victory would revive Bafana Bafana’s chances of progressing to the Round of 32, while another defeat would leave them on the brink of elimination ahead of their final group match against South Korea.
