Nokwane – His Majesty King Mswati III has warned that no level of technological advancement can ever replace the human spirit, saying people, not machines, remain the Kingdom of Eswatini’s greatest line of defence.
The King made these remarks during the 53rd Army Day celebrations held at the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) Headquarters in Nokwane on Friday, where he delivered the keynote address before members of the defence force.
At a time when militaries across the world are rapidly embracing advanced technologies and automated systems, the King told UEDF members that while tools and systems may enhance operations, they cannot replicate the judgment, resilience and moral strength of a trained and dedicated individual. He said courage, discipline and loyalty remain the true pillars of a strong defence force.
The King also pointed to the growing complexity of threats facing the nation, including social instability and internal divisions. He said the role of the military must extend beyond combat readiness to fostering national unity and safeguarding societal harmony.
He acknowledged the Defence Force’s expanding role in humanitarian efforts, noting that its involvement in disaster response and community support continues to strengthen trust between the military and civilians, a connection he described as a vital component of national resilience.
While commending ongoing cooperation with international partners, the Head of State maintained that external support and modern systems should complement, not overshadow, the human foundation of the country’s defence.
