Casablanca – Nigeria secured third place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties at Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca on Saturday. The match ended 0-0 after 90 minutes, with no extra time played.
The Super Eagles reached the third-place playoff following a semifinal loss to Morocco on penalties, while Egypt came off a 1-0 defeat to Senegal. Both teams battled intensely, with two Nigerian goals disallowed by the referee, keeping the score level in regulation.
The penalty shootout proved decisive. Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali emerged as the hero, saving efforts from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. After an early miss from F. Dele-Bashiru, A. Adams, Moses Simon, A. Iwobi, and Ademola Lookman scored to secure the win.
Nigeria now claims the bronze medal for a record ninth time, ending the tournament on a high after the semifinal disappointment. Host nation Morocco will face Senegal in the final at Rabat’s Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday at 8 p.m.
