Netflix has released the official trailer for The Rip a new crime thriller starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and directed by Joe Carnahan with the film set to premiere globally on January 16 2026.
The story unfolds in Miami where Damon plays Lieutenant Dane Dumars and Affleck appears as Detective Sergeant J D Byrne both serving in the Miami Dade Tactical Narcotics Team. The trailer opens with Dumars explaining how a routine seizure of cash appears straightforward until officers are forced to deal with the reality on the ground.
During a narcotics operation the team uncovers more than 20 million dollars believed to be cartel money. Procedure requires the cash to be counted on site placing the officers in a tense situation as they are isolated in hostile territory and unable to leave until the task is complete.
As pressure mounts the line between law enforcers and criminals begins to blur. Dumars has recently been promoted making him the leader of colleagues who were once his equals including Byrne. The shift fuels resentment and mistrust between the longtime partners as suspicions grow over their intentions.
The trailer shows the pair clashing openly as Byrne questions Dumars about whether he intends to steal the money. Trust within the unit continues to unravel while external threats close in through ominous phone calls coded signals from nearby houses and the looming presence of cartel operatives.
Carnahan says the officers are forced to defend their position while counting money that almost certainly belongs to dangerous criminals. Damon says the team is racing against time knowing the rightful owners of the cash are likely on their way.
The film features an ensemble cast that includes Steven Yeun Teyana Taylor Sasha Calle and Kyle Chandler portraying members of the tactical unit grappling with greed fear and loyalty. Action sequences shown in the trailer include gunfights car chases and rooftop confrontations as the operation spirals out of control.
Produced by Artists Equity the studio founded by Affleck and Damon The Rip bypasses cinemas and heads straight to streaming.
