Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is considering stepping away from boxing following a fatal car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his closest friends and team members.
The crash occurred on December 29 in Ogun State, Nigeria, when a vehicle carrying Joshua and members of his inner circle was involved in a serious collision. Joshua escaped with minor injuries, while Sina Ghami and Latif Latz Ayodele died at the scene. The two men were laid to rest in London on Sunday, January 4, attended by family members, friends and associates from the boxing world.
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, appeared before the Sagamu Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence. Kayode, 46, was granted bail of five million naira, approximately E55,000, and the matter was postponed to January 20.
Joshua, who was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, broke his silence days after the incident, sharing images on social media that included moments with the bereaved families. The post marked his first public response since the tragedy.
The crash came just ten days after Joshua’s high profile knockout win over social media personality turned boxer Jake Paul in Miami, a bout that had reignited global interest in his career and drew attention among boxing fans in Eswatini and across Africa.
Uncertainty now surrounds Joshua’s future in the sport. Despite links to a possible 2026 fight against fellow Briton Tyson Fury, who has spoken about returning to boxing, members of Joshua’s family suggest he may not compete again.
Speaking to Nigerian newspaper Punch, Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola, said the boxer had decided to retire, citing the emotional toll the sport has taken on the family.
He said each fight brought intense anxiety, adding that watching Joshua being knocked down felt overwhelming for relatives who feared for his safety. According to him, the family feels relief if Joshua has chosen to walk away while still widely respected.
