Mbabane – Former Ngwempisi Member of Parliament Mthandeni Dube returned home on 04 November after being pardoned by His Majesty King Mswati III and released from prison, only to find his house empty. Dube’s mother expressed joy at her son’s release but also shared her disappointment that his wife, Haziel Baxter, had taken all her belongings and left the home upon learning of his impending return.
According to a source close to the family, the relationship between Dube’s mother and Baxter had been strained during the period of his imprisonment.
The two women resided in the same compound, as Dube had built his marital house on his parental compound. The source said Baxter would mostly remain indoors in her house and rarely interacted with Dube’s mother. On occasions when she attempted to greet her, Baxter reportedly locked herself inside to avoid any conversation.
When the news about Dube’s possible pardonment was communicated to the media, one of the local daily newspaper reporters contacted Baxter to ask if she was aware that there was a possibility of Dube’s release. She said she was unaware of this move and said she was learning about it for the first time. Upon being asked how she felt about his return, she terminated the call immediately and did not respond to further attempts made by the scribe to reach her.
Shortly after his release, Dube filed for divorce, which was granted on the same day. The couple cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for ending their marriage and agreed to share custody of their son.
