Netflix’s Bad Influencer

Netflix’s Bad Influencer follows BK, a single mother in Johannesburg who turns to designing and selling counterfeit designer handbags to survive. Struggling with debt and caring for her neurodivergent son Leo, she partners with social media influencer Qween Pinks. Pinky promotes the fake bags online while BK handles production, drawing attention from both the criminal underworld and the police.

The series blends tension, humour, and social commentary, exploring the pursuit of status and wealth in modern society. BK’s complicated relationship with police officer Themba further blurs the line between family obligations and criminal ambition. Scenes in malls and clubs showcase influencer culture and the lure of fast money.

Jo-Anne Reyneke gives a nuanced performance as BK, portraying desperation, resourcefulness, and maternal devotion. Cindy Mahlangu’s Pinky brings charisma and unpredictability, while Thapelo Mokoena as Themba adds moral grounding. Mpilo Shabalala delivers a sensitive performance as Leo, avoiding stereotypes about neurodivergence.

Creator Kudi Maradzika presents a uniquely South African crime thriller with high stakes and complex characters. The supporting cast includes Julia Anastasopoulos as Dunia Balbek, Emmanuel Castis as Babi Balbek, Zozibini Tunzi as Naomi, Vincent Mahlape as Bra Alex, Viola Matjeke as a sales assistant, Brendon Daniels as Brigadier Booysens, Kamohelo Pule as Lelz, Lerato Nxumalo, Charlie Bouguenon as Jacques, Nat Ramabulana as Dingane, Hamilton Dlamini as Jobs Flames Jiyane, Modise Motaung as Aubrey Poo, and Mandla.

With only seven episodes in its first season, the show balances humour and suspense, keeping viewers engaged as BK navigates both her illegal enterprise and the challenges of caring for Leo. While the crime revolves around handbags rather than drugs or weapons, the series examines ambition, risk, and human vulnerability in a world dominated by social media.
