Lusaka – Zambia, Tanzania and China have officially launched the revitalisation of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka. The ceremony saw Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Tanzanian Vice-President Emmanuel John Nchimbi unveil a plaque marking the start of the programme.
President Hichilema described TAZARA as a symbol of enduring friendship and cooperation, stressing its significance for trade and investment between the three nations. He noted that the railway, which has long facilitated the movement of goods, represents an economic corridor connecting Tanzania, Zambia and China. Hichilema thanked China for opening its market to Zambian and Tanzanian products, particularly during fragile global trade conditions.
Premier Li called TAZARA a signature project of China–Africa cooperation and pledged China’s support for the revitalisation. He urged all companies and personnel involved to maintain high standards and use the project to strengthen regional infrastructure connectivity. He also spoke of plans to build a TAZARA prosperity belt and reinforce China–Africa cooperation in line with FOCAC Beijing summit outcomes.
Vice-President Nchimbi described the effort as more than an infrastructure upgrade, calling it the renewal of a sacred commitment. He said the revitalised railway would strengthen central and southern transport corridors and complement Tanzania’s ongoing port modernisation efforts.
