ADDIS ABABA — The African Union Commission has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya and a prominent African statesman.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, extended condolences to the Odinga family, the Kenyan government, and the African community on the continent’s loss.
Odinga was widely recognized for his decades-long work in promoting democracy, good governance, and people-centered development in Kenya. His efforts in justice, pluralism, and democratic reform resonated beyond Kenya, inspiring leaders and citizens across Africa.
As the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, Odinga played a key role in advancing the continent’s integration and connectivity agenda, contributing to initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader socio-economic transformation.
“Raila Odinga was a visionary leader who dedicated his life to justice, democracy, and unity. His legacy will continue to guide Africa’s pursuit of peace, prosperity, and democratic growth,” Youssouf said.
