Mbabane – A bilateral seminar on metabolic chronic diseases was held this week in Mbabane, bringing together health experts from Eswatini and Taiwan to discuss the prevention and treatment of diabetes, hypertension, and related complications.

The seminar was hosted under the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Project and featured a Taiwanese medical delegation led by Dr. Kuang-Han Lee, Deputy Director of the Center for International Health at National Taiwan University Hospital Hsinchu Branch. Local specialists included Dr. Nongabisa Mkhabela and Dr. Jingisile Dlamini, who shared experiences and approaches to tackling the growing burden of chronic illnesses.

The session was attended by Taiwan’s Ambassador to Eswatini, Mr. Ching-Lin Tsuei, and the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mr. Khanyakwezwe Mabuza. Both officials addressed participants, noting the shared commitment of the two nations to confront rising cases of metabolic conditions.

More than 70 people took part, including senior officials from the Ministry of Health, frontline health workers, and representatives from global organisations such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), World Vision, and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Organisers said some applicants could not be accommodated due to limited space, but a follow-up seminar is planned for October to expand participation.
