Mbabane – Eswatini will submit its third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) before the end of September, according to the UNDP Eswatini.

The five-year plan sets out how the country intends to cut carbon emissions and adapt to climate change impacts. It was developed through wide consultations with stakeholders across energy, transport, agriculture, forestry, waste management, water, health, disaster preparedness, infrastructure, finance, and vulnerable groups such as women, youth, and children.

A stakeholder validation meeting held at Mountain View Hotel in Mbabane reviewed the draft before submission ahead of the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), scheduled for November 10 to 21 in Belém, Brazil.

Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Khangeziwe Mabuza, said Eswatini ranks among the first 20 countries ready to submit NDC 3.0. She noted that the process benefited from both international technical experts and local specialists who contributed to shaping the plan.

UNDP Resident Representative Henrik Franklin explained that the draft was informed by several key components, including a detailed greenhouse gas inventory, a review of lessons from NDC 2.0, and consultations with youth, women, persons with disabilities, civil society and local communities. The plan also includes a finance assessment and a mitigation roadmap linking emission cuts to opportunities such as green jobs, food security and improved health.

Franklin said UNDP worked alongside the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office and other agencies to provide technical guidance, financial analyses and facilitate inclusive dialogue.
