DAURA – Nigeria is holding the state funeral today for former President Muhammadu Buhari in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. Buhari, aged 82, passed away in a London clinic last Sunday while under medical care.
Katsina Governor Dikko Umaru Radda confirmed the burial would take place today, following consultations with the late leader’s family. A delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima traveled to London on Monday to oversee the repatriation of Buhari’s remains.
Muhammadu Buhari first served as Nigeria’s military head of state in the 1980s. In 2015, he made history by becoming the first president to oust an incumbent (Goodluck Jonathan) via democratic elections and secured a second term in 2019. He completed his service and left office in 2023.
Global leaders have expressed condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India noted Buhari’s dedication to strengthening India–Nigeria relations and praised his “wisdom, warmth and unwavering commitment” to bilateral ties.
Buhari’s public persona was built on personal restraint and a firm stance against corruption. He often described himself as a “converted democrat,” transitioning from military command to civilian governance. He retained significant popularity in Nigeria’s Muslim-majority north.
Former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, who led the coup which removed Buhari in 1985, remembered him as “deeply spiritual and humble,” adding, “I never once doubted his sincerity or his patriotism.”
Since leaving office, Buhari largely withdrew from public affairs, spending his final years in Daura.
