An Eswatini-produced television drama is set to reach a wider regional audience when Ekhaya premieres on SABC 1 on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 7:30pm.

The nine-part series, originally produced by Eswatini Television, will occupy the Sunday evening drama slot on one of South Africa’s most-watched television channels.

Ekhaya follows the story of a successful city lawyer whose life takes an unexpected turn when he returns to his rural home after being chosen to become Chief. As he attempts to fulfil his traditional responsibilities, he finds himself caught in a web of corruption, power struggles and long-buried family secrets.

The drama explores themes of leadership, identity, culture and the clash between modern life and tradition. Through its storyline, the series offers viewers a glimpse into the complexities of rural governance and family dynamics while highlighting aspects of Eswatini’s cultural heritage.

The SABC 1 premiere marks a significant milestone for Eswatini’s film and television industry, providing a platform for local storytelling to reach audiences across Southern Africa.

The broadcast also reflects a growing appetite among regional broadcasters for authentic African stories rooted in local communities and traditions. Similar investments in locally produced African dramas have become increasingly prominent across Southern African television networks.
