The Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) has intercepted illicit cigarettes worth more than E1.67 million that were allegedly being smuggled into the country from Mozambique.
According to a statement issued by UEDF Public Affairs Officer Major Sandile Gwebu, soldiers on patrol intercepted a white Toyota Quantum at Mhlumeni in the Sitsatsaweni area of the Lubombo Region at about 5am on Monday.
The vehicle was found loaded with 79 boxes and 16 volumes of illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of E1 671 666.63. The suspects reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot after being pursued by security forces.
The vehicle, a Toyota Quantum bearing registration number ASD 797 DM, together with the cigarette consignment, was handed over to the relevant law enforcement authorities for further investigations.
The UEDF commended members of the public who continue to provide information that assists in combating cross-border crime and urged citizens to remain vigilant and support efforts to curb illegal activities along the country’s borders.
The military also warned against criminal activities taking place along Eswatini’s boundary lines, while praising troops for their continued commitment to protecting the country.
