Mbabane – The government has appointed Khangeziwe Mabuza, Acting Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accident Fund SMVAF. The announcement was made by Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg.
Rijkenberg said the Fund has faced persistent governance and operational challenges, which worsened following the resignations of the CEO, CFO, and COO. “As you all know, we’ve been having issues at the SMVAF. When we sat down as government, we saw that we have real problems at the entity, problems not only in leadership but holistically across the Fund. The reason these vacancies exist is because there are issues that need fixing,” he said.
The Minister explained that the government carefully considered the right candidate to lead the Fund’s turnaround. “We applied ourselves to who we believe will be the best person to try and solve these problems for us and assist the entity to get back on track. We have identified Khangeziwe Mabuza as that person, someone we believe can be strategically placed at the entity to solve the problem and drive the turnaround needed,” he said.
Mabuza has been appointed for a 12-month period, seconded by government, in a substantive role rather than acting capacity. “After 12 months, government will decide how to handle it,” Rijkenberg added.
He further noted that a recruitment process may follow depending on the outcomes of the turnaround. “We might go on a recruitment process to find a person to look after the entity, or maybe there will be an extension. We will see how we handle it in 12 months’ time based on outcomes and needs.”
