NEW YORK – Lesotho’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Lejone Mpotjoana, called for reforms at the 49th Annual Meeting of the G77 and China, held alongside the 80th United Nations General Assembly.
Mpotjoana urged the UN to become more just, inclusive, and geographically representative, while addressing pressing challenges faced by developing nations such as poverty, food insecurity, and energy crises. He noted that nearly 50 percent of Lesotho’s population lives in poverty and called for equitable financing to help Least Developed Countries, Landlocked States, and Small Island States meet the 2030 Agenda.
He stressed the urgency of climate action, including funding for adaptation and operationalizing the Loss and Damage Fund, and highlighted the importance of closing the digital divide, promoting youth employment, and investing in education and skills development.
The minister also raised concerns over UN budget shortfalls, reiterating Lesotho’s commitment to equity, justice, and strengthened multilateral cooperation.
