New York – His Majesty King Mswati III of Eswatini and incoming SADC Chairperson on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation has praised the citizens of Malawi for participating peacefully in the 2025 General Election. The poll, held on 16 September, was conducted to elect the President, Members of Parliament, and Local Government Councillors.
The Southern African Development Community Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) reported that the elections proceeded in an orderly manner. The mission remained on the ground during the post-election period, which it described as reflecting the spirit of peace.
The Malawi Electoral Commission processed all results within the legally stipulated timeframe. Citizens waited patiently for the announcement of final results, which were released on the evening of 24 September.
Earlier on the day of the results, President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera addressed the nation. He acknowledged that his main contender, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, had secured an insurmountable lead and was the presumptive winner of the presidential election. President Chakwera also confirmed he had called Professor Mutharika to offer his congratulations and wished him success as Malawi’s seventh President.
Speaking on behalf of SADC, the SEOM welcomed President Chakwera’s public gesture, saying it reinforces respect for the will of the people, constitutional values, and the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections. The mission extended gratitude to Malawians for their tolerance of differing political views and democratic maturity and encouraged all stakeholders to maintain these standards during the country’s transition and ongoing socio-economic development.
