Johannesburg – Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi says new striker Khanyisa Mayo’s lifelong connection to the club will be an advantage for Amakhosi.

Mayo, 27, has joined Chiefs on a season-long loan from Algerian side CR Belouizdad. The Mthatha-born forward is also the son of former Chiefs striker Patrick Mayo, who played for the club between 2003 and 2007.

“Nabi explained at Chiefs Village that the club tried to sign Mayo during his first pre-season here,” the coach said. “It didn’t work out at the time and he went to Algeria. But he has always been a Chiefs supporter, and he sees this as the opportunity of a lifetime. You cannot put a price on that kind of motivation.”

Nabi said Mayo brings both experience and composure from playing in pressure-filled environments. “We believe he will adapt quickly and can offer a different style of play. He has completed a full pre-season in Algeria and is fully fit, though he may not feature against Sekhukhune on Tuesday as registration is still being processed.”

The Chiefs coach also welcomed the presence of Thabiso Monyane and Mduduzi Shabalala in the Bafana Bafana squad for recent FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria. Monyane impressed after coming on against Nigeria at Free State Stadium in a 1-1 draw. Nabi added, “It is always an honour to have Chiefs players representing the nation. We hope more will follow, but that requires consistency and sacrifices from the players.”
