Phase 2 Rehabilitation ongoing with also installation of synthetic running track

Mbabane – The Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs has upped Somhlolo National Stadium Phase 2 Rehabilitation.

The Ministry announced that the ongoing rehabilitation of Somhlolo National Stadium under Phase 2 is now nearing its climax following the arrival and the installation of the synthetic running track and artificial turf material.

“The rehabilitation has been delayed by the arrival of both the track and turf material which were being shipped from overseas. However, all the material has now arrived on site and installation has begun, with the current works anticipated to be completed in six weeks’ time, weather conditions permitting,” said Communications Officer Sibongiseni Zondi a press statement.

He added, “Phase 2 of the rehabilitation of the National Stadium covers the installation of a brand new synthetic running track, artificial turf as well as the construction of a dedicated media tribune.”

Speaking shortly after the arrival of the track and turf material, Principal Secretary in the Ministry Prince Mlayeto said, “The Somhlolo National Stadium is one of our country’s most beloved event venues. It is used by sporting bodies, church bodies, schools and private organisations, among others. It is therefore imperative that we keep it in good shape to ensure that the nation has affordable access to good quality infrastructure. We are aware that the stadium has been out of use for a long time and we will strive to ensure that it is back available to be used by the nation as soon as possible.”

The Phase 2 works form part of a long rehabilitation programme for the stadium drawn up by the Ministry. Under Phase 1, the Ministry rehabilitated the stadium’s dressing rooms as well as the entire backroom area including VIP suites, match officials’ rooms and media rooms. In installing the new track and turf, the Ministry has been working closely with Athletics Eswatini and Eswatini Football Association to ensure that the facilities meet the required international standards.
