A helicopter has crashed and burned at the Mhlambanyatsi forests in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The helicopter went down, crashed, and caught fire, and everything that was in it was reduced to ashes. It is still not known what caused the accident, but an investigation is still underway.
Police Information and Communications Officer (PICO) Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, confirmed the matter without revealing much details, saying they were still at the scene and a report will be issued.
Montigny Spokesperson Sihlle Mavuso confirmed the incident of the helicopter that crashed in the forests but denied that it belonged to Montigny.
“Yes there is a helicopter that crashed here, we are still on our way to the scene to ascertain what happened. Otherwise, we do not know the owners of the helicopter,” he said.
Mavuso referred further questions to the aviation department which is responsible for issuing aviation and flight routes.
The helicopter is alleged to be registered in Namibia, as it bears a Namibian flag in its tail. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the helicopter was based at Siphofaneni and was engaged there for spraying sugarcane fields.
