Siphofaneni: Employees of Siphofaneni Inkhundla are now living in fear after the building was petrol bombed by unknown people.

Siphofaneni is located in the Lubombo Region whose Member of Parliament is Mduduzi ‘Magawugawu’ Simelane.

The incident has been kept under wraps as it happened three weeks ago. It took place on August 22 at around 6 pm. The Inkhundla is situated some few meters away from the bus rank.

Information gathered is that the incident is related to the ongoing unrest happening in the country as people are demanding democratic reforms. A source close to the matter revealed that it was the office of Indvuna Yenkhundla, Mzimela Simelane that was mostly damaged by the fire. However, it had been reliably gathered that a quick intervention by the Fire Emergency saved the situation. This was after a security guard who was on night duty raised an alarm.

“I think the incident happened because people are unhappy about the political system. Had it not been for the intervention by the Fire emergency officers, the Inkhundla would have been extensively burnt. We don’t know when the people will be struck again,” said the source.

When this reporter visited the Inkhundla last week, he found the damage especially on the window and other items burnt inside. The Indvuna yenkhundla office was deserted after the damages.

Reached for comment, Indvuna yenkhundla Mzimela confirmed the incident.

“It is true that the Inkhundla was bombed recently. They threw the petrol bomb through my window’s office. Table and chairs burnt. Some papers and documents were burnt. A strong smoke was seen on the building. Luckily the security guard raised an alarm. In no time, the Fire personnel managed to extinguish the fire,” he said.

Meanwhile, the last absolute monarchy previously known for peace and tranquillity has seen a spate of petrol bombings for the past four months.

Other related incidents are the petrol bombings of three police officers’ houses at Matsapha last week, resulting in damages amounting to E32 000, burning of Buy Cash Hardware at Hlathikhulu.
