Justice for Thabani protest: students injured, hospitalized

Manzini: While the students were demanding justice for their late colleague, some sustained multiple injuries during the protest and they had to be admitted in hospital.

This was during a march where thousands of university students marched to Sigodvweni and Manzini Police stations where they submitted a numerous petitions regarding the death of Thabani Nkhomonye.

The students who were joined by members of the public wanted police to be held accountable for the death of the young man who allegedly died at the hands of the police the previous week.

Regrettably, some of the protesters were injured during the squabble with the police. It was gathered that one of the protesters was shot at a close range with a rubber bullet and his eye was injured. Reports were to the effect that he was rushed to RFM hospital in Manzini. However, according to one of the protesters when they went to check him he was not there and that raised eyebrows to that protestors as they alleged that the police have hidden the victim.

When sought for comment, Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Phindile Vilakati confirmed the matter, saying two (2) protestors were injured and rushed to the RFM hospital and Mbabane Government hospital respectively.

Vilakati denied that the student who was rushed to RFM hospital was swiftly taken away, she said to her knowledge the student was still at the aforementioned hospital.
