Mbabane: The mounting pressure from the public demanding the justice for Thabani has pushed the government of Eswatini to commence own independent investigation.
According to the press statement released by the Acting Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla, the investigation is meant to find out what really transpired that led to the death of Thabani Nkomonye.
Dladla said the investigation will be carried out despite the report from Eswatini Royal Police Service which outlined the events that led to Nkomonye’s death. The police report indicated that Thabani did not die at the hands of police as alleged.
Meanwhile, the University of Eswatini (UNESWA) students had announced that they will be engaging in March from Kwaluseni campus to Sigodvweni Police Station where they will be demanding Justice for Thabani. The late Thabani was also a student from the university studying LLB.
The Acting DPM said government was very disturbed and duly condemn the unprofessional conduct observed from some police personnel when dealing with a suspect this past week.
The government’s condemnation of the police brutality was long overdue as the unprofessional conduct of the police officers who were seen in a circulating video assaulting a citizen had caused some much unrest. The public more especially social media users where the video made rounds were calling for justice to the victims.
Sabelo Masuku, commissioner of the Eswatini Human Rights Commission says they will implore the National Commissioner to come out and condemn such brutal behavior among the officer and further deal with the concerned officers accordingly.
In an interview with this reporter, the Human Rights Commissioner said they noted with distaste and shock the behaviour of the police in the circulating video.
“As a Commission we have been dedicating our time to sensitise members of REPS on the rights of suspects and the humane apprehension of people who happen to be in conflict with the law and the conduct of the police is a disappointment to the commission to say the least,” said Masuku.
