Mbabane – Eswatini and Mozambique are looking to strengthen cooperation in security, trade, transport and consular affairs as the two neighbouring countries seek to deepen relations and improve services for citizens living across their shared border.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Senator Pholile Shakantu held talks with Mozambique’s State Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Communities Abroad, Dr Maria de Fátima Manso, during a courtesy call on Friday.
The discussions centred on the longstanding relationship between the two countries and the need for continued high level engagement to ensure that existing bilateral agreements are implemented effectively.
Security and defence featured among the areas discussed, alongside trade, transport, consular matters and regional cooperation.
Shakantu welcomed an initiative by the Mozambican government aimed at bringing consular and documentation services closer to Mozambican nationals residing in Eswatini.
The initiative is expected to make it easier for Mozambican citizens in the Kingdom to access relevant government and documentation services without having to travel further afield.
The minister also expressed appreciation for the continued cooperation between the two governments in addressing matters affecting their respective communities.
The engagement provided an opportunity for Eswatini and Mozambique to identify practical areas for closer cooperation, particularly issues affecting citizens, cross border movement and relations between the two neighbouring countries.
