Mbabane: The contractor of the MR16 (Lukhula-Big bend) and MR 7 (Lonhlupheko-Siteki) roads says they are confident that the project will be finished by November 25, 2020.

The road infrastructure project which costed E545 million and saw 250 community members hired during the construction of MR16 and MR7 roads. This was revealed by the constructor’s representative Emmanuel Nsanzubuhoro on Friday during Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini’s tour on the under construction road project.

Prime Minister said the under construction Lonhlupheko-Siteki and Lukhula-Big Bend roads will help stimulate economic activity and aid connectivity with neighbouring countries.

Dlamini said these roads do not only inter-link towns and communities within the Kingdom of Eswatini but also form an important regional link between Eswatini, South Africa and Mozambique.

Premier said the road network we have toured today serves as a pillar within which our Government hopes to stimulate not only the local projects outlined in the Post COVID-19 Economy Recovery Plan, but also cross border social and economic activity as it enhances connectivity with our neighbouring countries in the Southern Africa region

He added that this, therefore, places Eswatini at an opportune position to become the gateway for trade and tourism in Africa; which is aligned with the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini’s economic turnaround strategies.

“The benefits of having access to quality infrastructure cannot be over-emphasised as we move progressively towards the ideals of Vision 2022 and the realisation of SDG 9; which is to build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.” Dlamini said.

Dlamini said a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) arrangement has been used in the financing and construction of this road. He added that similar funding models and approaches are encouraged in the implementation of other road projects as this is in line with the aspirations of our Strategic Roadmap; which envisages a private sector-led economy.

PM reiterated Government’s commitment towards ensuring sustainable economic development, financial stability and growth and improving the quality of life of Emaswati; through providing easily accessible services that will enhance their welfare and living standards.

He touched on the recent re-opening of borders saying cross border economic and transport activity is bound to increase. Therefore, the nation should be more vigilant in protecting each other by following the health protocols and COVID-19 guidelines in all sectors to minimise the rebound of new infections.
