Matsapha- A tragic incident has left residents of Mathaneni in Matsapha in shock after a toddler reportedly drowned in an uncovered sewer on Sunday night.

According to information gathered from a family member, the child’s mother had just returned from work and collected her son from a nearby daycare centre before heading to their rented home.

It is alleged that upon arriving at the house, the mother opened the door and went inside to continue with her usual household chores while the child played near the entrance outside.

After some time, the mother reportedly noticed that the child had gone quiet and was nowhere to be seen. Concerned, she began asking neighbours if they had seen him, but no one could account for the toddler’s whereabouts.

Sources say the compound where the mother and the child lived had an uncovered sewer. Initial searches around the area reportedly yielded no results, prompting residents to continue searching in nearby homes and surrounding flats.

The matter was later reported to the Sigodvweni Police Station, whose officers responded swiftly to the scene.Upon arrival, police reportedly searched the sewer where it is reported that the child’s body submerged. The toddler was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
