Mbabane – The Federation of Eswatini Trade Unions (FESWATU) welcomes the prospects of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) renewed trade contracts, describing the move as critical for job security, economic sustainability and the future of workers, particularly in the textile industry.
Speaking in an interview with local journalists the Secretary General of FESWATU, Phendulile Zikalala, reflected on the painful memories associated with previous uncertainties around AGOA, recalling the period between 2014 and 2015 when the country experienced widespread job losses following company downsizing.
“That period takes us back to a very difficult time for workers,” Zikalala said, adding, “In 2014 it was announced that AGOA would be coming to an end, and by 2015 many companies were already downsizing. Workers were losing jobs and, with that, their bargaining power.”
She noted that the crisis marked a defining moment for the labour movement, with FESWATU emerging during that turbulent period as workers sought collective representation amid growing insecurity, especially in the textile sector, which relies heavily on export markets.
As 2026 begins, however, the renewed prospects of AGOA contracts have reignited optimism among workers and unions alike.
According to FESWATU, a successful renewal would provide much-needed continuity for businesses and reassurance for thousands of employees whose livelihoods depend on the scheme.
“The renewal of AGOA means sustainability for the economy,” the SG said. “It also opens the possibility for re-engagement and job creation. It represents progress and continuity, not just for industry, but for workers and their families,” she emphasised.
She further expressed hope that the renewed agreements would translate into long-term employment security, particularly for workers in the textile industry, which remains one of Eswatini’s largest formal employers.
“As workers, we truly appreciate the renewal process,” she said. “Our hope is that as these contracts are signed, they will be successful and allow workers to continue accessing jobs.”
FESWATU has urged all stakeholders to ensure that the benefits of AGOA renewal are fully realised on the ground, stressing that sustainable trade must go hand in hand with decent work, job protection and inclusive economic growth.
