Mbabane – The Ministry of Agriculture reported new outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease in Zombodze Emuva, Shiselweni, during a press briefing at its Mbabane offices this morning. The Minister for Agriculture outlined the national response and measures underway to control the disease.

The Botswana Vaccine Institute has sent a team to Eswatini to collect samples to identify the specific FMD strains currently affecting livestock. This marks the institute’s second visit, following an earlier mission late last year when blood and tissue samples were collected from clinically sick cattle in Lubulini, Siphofaneni and Mambane dip tanks. Blood was also collected for Post Vaccine Monitoring in the fully vaccinated dip tanks at Hluthi and Lavumisa. The BVI team has returned with a report of their initial findings and is now focusing on the newly affected areas.

Government is considering a nationwide mass vaccination programme to curb the spread of FMD, though the Ministry stressed that vaccination alone will not suffice. Farmers are urged to fully cooperate with movement controls and other restrictions. The Minister said that a combination of strict biosecurity measures and vaccination is essential to effectively control the disease. Details of the mass vaccination exercise will be shared once preparations are finalised.

Despite losing its “FMD-free without vaccination” status, Eswatini can work towards regaining access to international markets under the “FMD-free with vaccination” status. Officials said this will be a priority for the national response team.

The sell-to-slaughter arrangement remains in place. Farmers must follow all guidelines and obtain permits from the nearest veterinary office before moving livestock. The Ministry assured that Standard Operating Procedures have been developed to allow controlled livestock sales, balancing disease control with protecting farmers’ livelihoods.
