MANZINI – The visit by global streaming sensation Darren Watkins Jr., widely known as IShowSpeed, to the Kingdom of Eswatini has opened a wider conversation on national branding, authenticity and how small countries can position themselves on the global stage.
Municipal Council of Manzini Information and Communications Manager Phumlani Matse weighed into the debate following the influencer’s recent African tour, which attracted worldwide attention across digital platforms. Matse admitted he was largely unfamiliar with IShowSpeed before the tour but described the content creator as one of the most influential streamers globally, commanding the attention of millions in real time.
IShowSpeed’s African journey included a stop in South Africa, where he took part in headline-grabbing and unconventional stunts, among them standing on a drifting car driven by Red Bull-sponsored driver Sam Sam. From there, the streamer crossed into Eswatini, a stop Matse identified as central to the discussion around the country’s global image.
Matse noted that Eswatini, by comparison, is a smaller nation with fewer entertainment options and a largely homogeneous society, often leading to the perception that it has little to offer next to its neighbours. He argued that such assumptions overlook the country’s cultural depth and uniqueness.
During his time in Eswatini, IShowSpeed was immersed in everyday emaSwati life, experiencing local traditions, music, attire and food. According to Matse, the influencer encountered scenes and sensations that could not be replicated elsewhere, from the rhythms of traditional songs to the atmosphere within rural homesteads.
The programme was curated by local stakeholders, including the Eswatini Tourism Authority and Swazi Trails, who opted to present the country without glamour or spectacle. Rather than staging elaborate performances, the organisers introduced the streamer to authentic cultural expressions such as emahiya, emajobo and village life in emalawini.
Matse said the experience appeared to resonate deeply with IShowSpeed, pointing to a social media post shared by the streamer after his visit as evidence that the cultural encounter left a lasting impression. He described the moment as an example of how authenticity can cut through global noise more effectively than spectacle.
While acknowledging that the tour did not include a stop in Manzini, Matse rated the overall execution highly, describing it as a strong demonstration of Eswatini telling its own story on its own terms.
