Mbabane – Darren Watkins Jr, AKA IShowSpeed, has endured the tribal regiment’s initiation ritual, kubutseka, in Eswatini as part of his African tour, after sprint racing with a cheetah. He was given the tribe name Logijimako, which means ‘Speed’, and is now an Inkhanyeti warrior.
Earlier in the day, the Eswatini Tourism Authority released “big news” about Speed’s visit to the country in X.
“We are thrilled to welcome @ishowspeed in the Kingdom of Eswatini. Watch the live stream now on his YouTube channel @IShowSpeed,” it posted.
Speed has been posting updates of himself undergoing the process.
He began his YouTube live program at Mantenga Cultural Village, where he was guided through the village culture of Eswatini and consulted a traditional doctor.
After crawling through the hut to see the village doctor, he went to the water wafting. The doctor threw the bones at him, telling him he had a bright future and would gain a large following.
Speed’s YouTube channel has about 47.2 million subscribers.
In other updates, he has learnt about the value of the bride price, gone snake-sightseeing and, as a show of strength, toured a car with a rope around his shoulders.
But nothing could have been a better climax of his tour than joining the regiment, where he also partook in traditional dances.
When he was asked if he preferred to be alerted of what would happen, Speed elected to be surprised. Indeed, he appeared like he was. He was shown running around and taking instructions from traditionalists.
Speed was then told the purpose of his initiation was as a show of deep respect, honour and loyalty to the king. He also appeared to accept his given name.
