MASERU – His Majesty King Letsie III has urged the government and public sector to invest in nutrition as a way to tackle hunger, poverty and boost development in Lesotho. Speaking in his New Year’s message, the King, who is also the African Union Champion of Nutrition and a FAO Special Ambassador, said the country must make use of current rains to improve food production.
The King warned that climate change continues to threaten agriculture and nutrition, calling for climate-resilient farming practices. He also drew attention to the slow economy, high youth unemployment, and rising gender-based violence, noting that around 30 percent of girls aged 15 experience violence. He called on all Basotho to unite in protecting women and girls and praised those who care for victims of violence for their dedication.
Marking 2026 as the 60th anniversary of Lesotho’s independence, King Letsie urged citizens to thank God for guidance over the years while upholding the nation’s founding pillars of peace, love and unity. He encouraged the nation to reflect on 2025 and correct any shortcomings.
The King concluded by wishing Basotho a prosperous New Year and God’s protection throughout 2026.
