MASERU – Local entrepreneur Kananelo Molemane is turning her personal experience with skin problems into a growing business with Machaba Petroleum Jelly, a product made from stinging nettle, known locally as bobatsi.
Molemane launched the business in 2024 after noticing improvements in her own skin, prompting her to produce a solution for others facing similar challenges. “I have dealt with skin issues for a long time, and the improvements I saw in my skin after using this product motivated me to produce it for others,” she said.
The petroleum jelly contains natural extracts from stinging nettle, a plant rich in minerals essential for healthy skin. Molemane said the plant’s low-maintenance nature makes it ideal for cultivation and ensures a stable supply for production. Users can apply the jelly to moisturize and protect the skin from rashes, eczema, dryness, and cracks. It can also be used as a light cosmetic after bathing, either in the morning or evening.

Sample packs have been distributed locally, with positive feedback reported from users. Molemane noted that formal testing is underway to confirm the product’s safety for mass distribution.
Challenges remain for scaling production, mainly due to limited funding and pending certification documents. Despite this, the entrepreneur remains committed to expanding access to her locally made skincare solution.
