Isuzu appears to be readying a replacement for its current D-Max, with a potential reveal expected around 2027. The current model, first launched in Thailand in 2019, entered its sixth production year this year and received its first facelift in 2023, including the introduction of a 2.2-litre MaxForce turbodiesel engine paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The future of the 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine, a staple in the D-Max range since 2002, remains uncertain due to new emissions regulations. The engine may be replaced by an upgraded MaxForce unit, as seen in the DragonMax concept presented in Thailand last year.

In South Africa, Isuzu has not confirmed when the facelifted or new generation D-Max will go on sale. The company offers two derivatives locally: the conventional D-Max and the older GEN 6 model, which functions as a back-to-basics workhorse. CEO Billy Tom indicated that the rollout of the 2.2-litre engine and potential all-electric D-Max EV will depend on testing and market readiness.

The all-electric D-Max is already available in Europe, and Isuzu plans to study its viability for South African conditions to ensure consumers are not disadvantaged. With the heavily updated MU-X imported from Thailand debuting earlier this year, more information about the D-Max is expected to emerge in 2026.
