Mbabane – Motorists in Eswatini could soon have another contender in the highly competitive double cab and SUV market as Chinese automaker Chery considers expanding its upcoming KP31 bakkie into a sport utility vehicle capable of challenging established names such as the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest.
The KP31 concept was unveiled in Australia last month and is built on a ladder frame chassis. The production model is expected to reach South Africa either later this year or in early 2027, a timeline that could see it filtering into the Eswatini market soon after through local dealerships.
Developed in Wuhu, China, the KP31 will become the brand’s second bakkie following the Himla. It is earmarked primarily for export markets, with South Africa confirmed as one of the destinations. Industry observers say Eswatini often benefits from new model introductions that first land across the border.
Powering the KP31 will be a plug in hybrid 2.5 litre turbodiesel engine. A petrol plug in hybrid derivative is also under development and is expected to compete directly with electrified rivals such as the BYD Shark.
Speaking to Australian media at the vehicle’s debut, Chery Australia Chief Operating Officer Lucas Harris said the possibility of an SUV variant has not been ruled out. He described the idea of a wagon version as appealing but indicated that the company’s immediate priority is to deliver a credible and capable bakkie before branching out into additional body styles.
For now, the KP31 is expected to be offered exclusively as a double cab. Chery has confirmed that it will feature rear and centre locking differentials, a low range transfer case and multiple driving modes. A Trail Turn Assist system similar to that found in the Ford Ranger will also be included to improve off road manoeuvrability.
Unlike the Himla and its rebadged sibling the Rely R08, the KP31 will boast a towing capacity of 3 500kg and a payload of 1 000kg, figures that place it firmly among serious workhorse contenders in the region.
Chery South Africa has hinted that a local market reveal could take place either later this year or in early 2027. Should plans for an SUV derivative receive approval, further details are likely to emerge from 2027 onwards, potentially setting the stage for a new seven-seater challenger on Eswatini roads.
