Mbabane – Farmers in Mahlangatsha will no longer walk long distances to dip their livestock after the Minister of Agriculture, Mandla Tshawuka, officially opened the Nkonono dipping tank.
The new facility is expected to improve livestock health, strengthen disease-control efforts, and boost productivity among farmers who previously struggled with access to dipping points.
During the event, Tshawuka urged farmers to make full use of the Government Bull Loan Scheme, noting that improved cattle breeds lead to better market returns and stronger household incomes. He encouraged farmers to take advantage of the programme to enhance both the quality and value of their herds.
The minister also issued a stern warning against wildfires, describing them as a major threat to grazing land and livestock productivity. He stressed that preventing fires protects not only the environment but also farmers’ financial investments.
On stock theft, Tshawuka assured farmers that the government is working on tightening laws to curb the crime and safeguard farmers’ assets, emphasising that the fight against stock theft remains a priority.
Addressing animal-health concerns, he commended farmers for maintaining a clean record regarding Foot and Mouth Disease in the area. He urged them to continue following veterinary advice, observing safety guidelines, and cooperating with animal-health officers to keep the region disease-free.
Tshawuka encouraged farmers to adopt a profit-driven approach, saying livestock farming has the potential to provide a sustainable and decent livelihood when managed commercially.
