Mbabane – A 63-year-old woman by the name of Thandie Masuku of Macobolwane appeared at the Mbabane Magistrates Court to give her sworn statement after being charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). She is accused of knocking one Paito Mavundla with a stone several times on the head.
According to the charge sheet, Masuku allegedly struck Mavundla during an argument. She caused injuries. During her appearance in court today, in her sworn submission, Masuku told the court that the incident started while she was drinking with friends at a Frazer homestead.
She said Mavundla arrived and found them sitting on a bench enjoying their drinks and he just faced her demanding that she vacate her seat for him.
The elderly woman said Mavundla sat on her lap by force. She pushed him but he started insulting her. Masuku said she then went away. She further told the court that she was offended by his insults. They were unwarranted, she said.
The elderly woman also told the court that on the following day they were again met at the same drinking spot. She said Mavundla again came and found them sitting by the kitchen and began shouting insults.
She evaded him still. But the provocation persisted, she said. At that point, the elderly woman assaulted him with an open hand. A fight broke loose.
Masuku said when she was moving out of the kitchen, Mavundla poked her. She had a bad recollection of when she assaulted him with the stone. She insisted that it was self defence as Mavundla could have easily overpowered her.
She denies intentionally attacking him. She said she is not a bully, insisting that the complainant violated her by sitting on her without permission.
When community police were called, they took both the complainant and the accused to the Mntulwini before the police came and took her away. Masuku was remanded out of custody until the 2nd of February 2026 for continuation of trial and she is expected to bring along her witnesses.
