Pigg’s Peak – A 35-year-old man from Ngololweni tragically lost his life late Sunday night after falling into a mine shaft while allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities at the Piggs Peak Old Gold Mine.
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 11 p.m. on November 9, 2025. It is believed that the man was attempting to access the mine shafts using a ladder when he received a phone call. The distraction reportedly caused him to miss a step and fall into the shaft, sustaining fatal injuries.
Pigg’s Peak Police have since opened an enquiry file to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. Authorities are working to establish whether he was working alone or with others at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) has issued a stern warning to members of the public to refrain from entering abandoned mine sites or engaging in illegal mining activities. The police emphasized that such practices are not only life-threatening but also constitute a criminal offense punishable by law.
“The public is reminded that illegal mining is a serious crime that can lead to prosecution and imprisonment. Old mine shafts are extremely unstable and pose a significant danger to anyone who attempts to enter them,” said REPS in a statement.
