Bhunya – Montigny Investments, in partnership with the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS), on Friday hosted a Suicide Indaba at Bhunya Stadium to confront the rising cases of suicide and rape in the country.
Held under the theme “Changing the Narrative of the Scourge of Suicide and Rape in Our Society,” the event brought together key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, SWAGAA, Khwakha Indvodza, magistrates, traditional leaders, community police, and school children.
The event began with a unity walk from Gate 2 to Bhunya Stadium, symbolising solidarity and commitment to mental health and social well-being. This was followed by a series of panel discussions moderated by Sihle Mavuso, Nelly Dlamini, and Siphesihle Sihlabani SebeNguni.
Speakers highlighted the alarming increase in suicide and gender-based violence cases, particularly those involving minors. They stressed the importance of mental health awareness, parental guidance, and collaboration among institutions to tackle these issues effectively.
The dialogue also shed light on the country’s growing rape crisis, with speakers urging for the restoration of moral values, respect, and open communication within families and communities. Calls were made for the justice system to strengthen its forensic capacity to ensure sensitive cases are handled efficiently and victims receive justice.
Law enforcement officers raised concern over the rising number of male suicide cases, describing the situation as a national emergency that requires urgent attention.Community and traditional leaders encouraged the use of traditional forums such as Indaba Zabantu to promote dialogue, unity, and collective problem-solving in addressing social challenges.
