Madlangemphisi – Environmental health officials have investigated shopping outlets in Madlangemphisi area in the northern Hhohho region, condemning and destroying food items deemed unfit for human consumption.
The operation was carried out by the Ministry of Health, targeting food establishments to identify products that violate food safety standards under the Public Health (Food Hygiene) Regulations of 1973.
Officers discovered a range of non-compliances, including expired and dented food items with damaged packaging, repackaged and unlabelled products, and poor hygiene practices within storage areas.
In some establishments, inadequate ventilation and unclean premises created conditions that could accelerate spoilage and foster contamination, posing serious health risks to consumers.
As a result, all unsafe food items were immediately confiscated and destroyed to prevent possible foodborne illnesses.
The ministry’s Environmental Health Department continues to urge the public to remain vigilant when purchasing food by checking expiry dates, packaging integrity, and product labels. The department emphasized that such inspections are part of its ongoing efforts to ensure food safety and protect public health across Eswatini.
