Gaborone – Botswana’s Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs has started drafting the country’s first Gender Based Violence (GBV) Bill, aimed at prevention, protection, care, and support for victims.
The initiative will run alongside a review of the Policy on Gender and Development and the development of the National Gender Strategy, which outlines specific actions for mainstreaming gender across various sectors.
Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs Lesego Chombo said the ministry has consulted the Parliamentary Caucus on Women to ensure perspectives are aligned. The drafting process will also involve extensive consultations with Batswana to shape the contents of the bill.
The ministry acknowledged the support of the World Bank and other development partners, affirming its commitment to promoting gender equality and creating a safer environment for all citizens.
