Lobamba – Members of Parliament have raised concerns over the unfair criteria used in the disbursement of the Millennium Projects Development Fund and called for lifestyle audits of those managing the fund.
During a parliamentary debate, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport was asked to back-up how millennium projects including the International Convention Centre and Five-Star Hotel (ICC and FISH) managed to spend millions. The MPs said they fear that some individuals might have benefitted disproportionately, leading to misusing of public funds, calling for transparency and lifestyle audits of project managers and consultants.
MP Sabelo Maseko questioned why some development projects appeared to favour a select few while leaving others behind. He demanded that the ministry justify the selection process for beneficiaries and ensure fair distribution of resources.
Other MPs also criticised delays in project implementation and questioned the ministry’s oversight capacity. They said the lack of accountability had eroded public trust and undermined the purpose of the development fund.
In response, officials from the ministry acknowledged some challenges but maintained that funds had been properly utilised.
