Manzini– A 58-year-old Ngwane Park man has lost more than E118 000 from his bank account after he was allegedly tricked by a caller posing as a police officer.
The man was reportedly defrauded of E118 172.91 on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at about 12:45pm while in the Manzini area.
According to the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS), the victim received a phone call from a person claiming to be a police officer.
The caller allegedly told him that his cellphone number had been hacked and was being used to scam other people.
The suspect then offered to assist the victim by blocking his bank account and instructed him to follow a series of steps.
The victim followed the instructions, not realising that he was being deceived.
It was only after receiving notifications from his bank about transactions on the account that he discovered that he had been scammed.
The matter was reported to Manzini Police, who are now investigating the case of theft by false pretences.
Police have cautioned members of the public against providing banking information or following instructions from callers claiming to be police officers.
The REPS said police officers do not call members of the public to discuss their banking details or conduct investigations over the telephone.
Anyone who receives a call from a person claiming to be a police officer or a member of the REPS has been advised to visit the nearest police station to verify the caller’s identity.
Members of the public can also contact the police emergency line for assistance if they are uncertain about such calls.
