SIDVOKODVO – Grindrod celebrated the second anniversary of its Bassopa Safety Culture Campaign last week, bringing together employees, contractors, and strategic partners across Eswatini, Mozambique, and South Africa. The event featured cultural performances, personal testimonies, and awards recognising staff who consistently demonstrate safety and the company’s values. Longstanding collaborator Eswatini Railways (ESR) also attended.
At the same event, Grindrod introduced The Grindrod Way, a new framework designed to drive business growth and operational effectiveness through a people-centric approach. Kwazi Mabaso, CEO of Grindrod Bulk Division, described it as an integrated model aimed at advancing customer service and operational excellence while prioritising safety, ethical standards, and the company’s organisational Purpose.
Mkhululi Dlamini, Head of Operations for Eswatini and Sidings, reported that the Sidvokodvo project has transported nearly 4 million tonnes of cargo from Sidvokodvo to the Port of Maputo over four years without any major injuries. The initiative has handled more than 60 vessels through the Eswatini corridor and directly supported almost 200 local transporters. It has also created significant socio-economic impact, including road tolls paid at the border, fuel purchased at local stations, increased activity in formal and informal businesses, and the employment of nearly 100 Emaswati people.

Since its launch in 2023, the Bassopa campaign has achieved a 62% reduction in Lost Time Injuries (LTI) and a 47% improvement in Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR). These results were driven by structured closeout processes, peer accountability, open communication, and proactive near-miss reporting.
The Grindrod Way framework focuses on Safety, Values and Ethics, Customer Excellence, Operational Excellence, and Recognition. It is intended to further strengthen company culture, employee engagement, and operational performance across all Grindrod facilities.
Grindrod operates across Sub-Saharan Africa with strategic terminal operations and logistics services including customs clearance and forwarding, intermodal solutions, rail logistics, road and sea transport, project logistics, ship agency services, terminal operations, and warehouse management.
